Assumptions about carers at work

A carer at the forum claimed that many assumptions are made about those with caring responsibilities. The carer also stated that many people with caring responsibilities do not always receive support or assistance because they don’t fit the traditional view of a caring role.  Do you have any experiences where assumptions have been made about you?

Yes, I do have some experience when an assumption was made (and I felt judged as not good daughter/carer for elderly mother) by the service provider who provides home assistance to my mother.

Also, many assumptions are made by GP’s and other professionals who are available to see the patients/clients only in between 9am-5pm, Mon. to Fri. So, for full time working carer plus single mother and grandmother is very hard to get all those appointments and duties met during the working hours of the professionals and other services. more flexibility and open minded practicinals/services are required.

Being a migrant, I have often recieved comments by Health services assuming that i live with my frail aged parents. They seem to think that all migrant families live together in one big happy house. As a result, they get frustrated with me that i cannot provide information or monitoring of my parents. I get frustrated that they rely on ridiculous stereotypes to enforce further demands on me and my family.
