Encouraging carers to identify themselves
Many carers are not comfortable in revealing their caring responsibilities to their employer for many reasons. Should carers be encouraged to come forward in the workplace? If so, how should they be encouraged to do this?

This is a big issue for carers as there is a belief that your caring role will be looked at as a liability by your employer. While this will be the case in some circumstances, carers will find that most employers will appreciate your honesty, particularly if you approach them with facts and ideas on how this will not be a negative for their business.
On the gateway we have pages and fact sheets dedicated to approaching your employer and how to stand up for your rights in a way that will not threaten your job.
Visit this site at www.workingcarers.org.au and go to the Employees section for more information.
We need our carers to self identify so that employers realise that the burden of care is wide spread and on the increase.
Can anyone share their story here? How did you approach your boss?
